In the glamorous business of Bollywood its not often you find an eminent actor sporting a look which is de-glamorous. Off late the situation is changing. The trend of films that are happening in HI FI [Hindi film industry according to Salman Khan] is paving way for this kind of experiments lately though an actor like Aamir Khan started this make-over phenomenon long back.
If you go by records of Aamir Khan, he is always known to experiment with his looks, starting from Dil Chahta hai [in which he sported cool college guy look by trimming of his mane hair and leaving out a front [small beard beneath his lips] to 3 idiots. Add to it who’ll forget his look in the block-buster Ghajini for which the actor received rave reviews.
On the other hand if there is an actor who never changes his looks for a role it should be Salman Khan. The actor is very apprehensive about his good boy looks and it shows considering the number of films that he had done with the same look. There was an extent when the actor denied roles after being asked by the directors for a make-over.
But lately the star is also in make-over mood and what better example than his look in BO bonanza Dabangg. The actor sported a moustache for the first time in his career in Dabangg provided he was convinced about it by the director of the film. Before the start of Dabangg, Abhinav Kashyap [director of Dabangg] was afraid to ask for a make-over look to Salman. The reason being the actor would never encourage changing his looks.
If the records are set straight, the amount of enthusiasm that Dabangg garnered pre- release was because of only Salman’s look in it.
Add to it, the interesting fact is that he didn’t grow it for the film, it was a pasted moustache. The same was the case with Tere Naam and BO disaster Veer. The one apprehension that the makers still have with Maine Pyar Kiya star is with regards to his body. Thorough denials from the Khan did emerged when he was asked to shed some muscles for a particular character.
At the same time the same is the case with SRK. Tracking his films one would question Shahrukh why he never had a make-over until Chak-De. In Chak-De the actor sported a rough beard in the entire film for the first time in his career. Though he was seen in a beard in Hey Ram it was a miniscule role by the DDLJ star. After Chak-De the actor was once again back to his romantic Raj avatars apart from growing hair and developing abs for Om Shanti Om.
It seems now the actor realized what a make-over can do and especially after what it did to his arch rival Salman Khan. SRK is sporting a new look for Don 2- the chase begins. He is seen in long hairs in the leaked pics all over the internet provided he too like Salman didn’t grow it naturally. Both SRK and Salman are at least on one platform with regards to growing moustache or beard. Both the actors in many interviews did state that beard or moustache causes irritation leading to them not being comfortable. Wonder why, when the producers are investing that much money and when character is final?
On the contrary Hrithik Roshan is always known to be a director’s actor. He is always ready to sport whatever look the script and character demands and it was evident when he did Lakshay, Dhoom 2 [various get-ups], Jodha- Akbar and the more recent Guzaarish.
Young actors like Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan are realizing this fact of how much importance a make-over will do with regards to their careers. Though they were not set a good example by their seniors they understand what medium they are in and are doing there bits in order to fulfill the character entities. Ranbir for the first time is going for a make over in Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar after sporting a grown beard for his role in Rocket Singh- Sales man of the year. He is slated to go for another complete make over in Anurag Basu’s Barfee in which is playing a mentally challenged role.
While on the other hand his contemporary Imran is yet to get a good role which will see him in a complete make over. At present the “I hate Luv stories” star is experimenting with his hair in Short Term Shaadi opposite Kareena Kapoor.
How can one forget Mr. Bachchan if we are talking about make-over with regards to superstars of this era? Bachchan is still a superstar and will remain one for sure. Bachchan continued his normal angry man look till the peak of his career apart from experimenting in some films such as Shahenshah, Laawaris [sported all get ups that an actor can sport] etc. But he was never known for a make-over. After reaching 55 plus the actor resorted to some make over as who can forget Auro in Paa [2009].
His charismatic French beard is an inspiration for senior citizens across the country. Films like AKS, Black and Family witnessed Bachchan in a new avatar. Add to it he is all set to sport a complete different look for Aarakshan and Bbuddah. We hope they both turn out good.
Well, at the end of the day let’s hope that the season of make-overs would not only be appreciated by one and all but also should make sure that a particular character essayed by an actor is final at the end of the day.
