Kollywood is getting into the trend of remake in the recent days. If we have a look at the past we have come across different trends in Tamil cinema. Let’s take a look at the trends we have come across each period so far.
We have seen a group of Mumbai Beauties who made their presence on Tamil screens in one season.Family sentiment is high on demand in the next era while heroes with split personalities trend has seen the limelight during one season and then came the rowdy hero stories in the next period. So by continuing this trend setting factor next factor which is full on demand at present in Kollywood is the remake of films into Tamil.
If taken a look at the future films which are hitting screens are almost the remake of hit films in other language. All the top heroes starting from Vijay, Suriya, and Vikram are acting in one or another super hit film’s remake. The main thing to be considered here is there is no language boundary for remake at all. The Tamil cinema is experiencing the biggest remake hunt this year and this paved the way for rise in the price of the remake rights. Mostly the films that are getting remake in Tamil are just the carbon copy of original films, as any kind of serious changes in the script is not made. If the changes in the script are made like adding the taste of Tamil, will make the film run for more days at the box office. Now let’s take a look at the remake films that are released and are set to release.
Vijay, the Remake King of Kollywood is yet again coming with Velayudham which is the remake of Telugu Hit Film Azad. His Pongal release Kaavalan too is the remake of Malayalam super hit Body Guard. Dhanush’s forthcoming film Mappillai is the remake of his father-in-law’s famous film Mappillai of 1980’s. Silambarasan’s Vaanam which is gearing up for its release too is the recreated copy of Telugu hit Vedam. Coming to Thala Ajith his next film Mankatha is the replica of Bollywood hit film Race. On mentioning about Vikram his next venture Pitha is inspired by Hollywood film I am Sam.
The handsome hunk of Kollywood Suriya’s next biggest release 7am Arivu is also the carbon copy of Hollywood blockbuster film Inception. As known to us Director Shankar’s prestigious project Nanban is the replica of Hindi film 3 Idiots. Naan Aval Adhu starring Madhavan, Sada and Shamitha Shetty in the lead roles is the remake of Hindi film Darling released in 2007.
Apart from the films which are on the sets, the films which are in discussions too are the remakes versions of Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam. An upcoming star currently is in plans on remaking Ravi Teja's latest hit film Mirapakay. On the other side there was heavy competition for getting the Tamil remake rights of 2010, Salman Khan's hit film Dabangg. For performing the lead role in the Tamil remake Simbu and Karthi are in race but finally it’s Simbu who won the chance to play the lead role Chulbul Pandey in this comedy and action entertainer. Kollywood producers Mohan Apparao and T Ramesh have acquired the rights of Dabangg remake for a huge amount and buzz is that it is the highest amount ever paid for a Tamil remake. Debutant director Nandini Reddy’s critically acclaimed Telugu film Ala Modalaindi was also bought by a famous producer for an amount of Rs 50 lakhs and the film will be directed in Tamil by a popular director.
Malayalam trendsetter and super hit film Traffic remake rights are much in demand as three leading production houses of Kollywood are in competition for purchasing the rights. And recently Mumbai-based production house came in contact with Nayantara to remake Priyanka Chopra sizzler Fashion in Tamil. Later it is heard that the offer landed with Trisha and she will be reprising Priyanka’s role while Priyamani is likely to do Kangana's role. The launch of one more star's son in Tamil is going to be with the remake of Band Baaja Baaraat for which they are trying to rope in Tamanna to reprise Anushka Sharma's role.
If we go back to the past, Remakes are not new to Tamil as we have witnessed them many times but the big puzzle now on top of everyone's mind is that why there is sudden increase of remakes in the industry. It is happening due to the lack of gripping scripts, scarcity for our writers or stories, the Tamil directors are opting for remakes and this paved the way for the unexpected increase of remakes. Many new directors and heroines from the Tollywood, Bollywood and Mollywood have started targeting Kollywood.
Most of our Tamil stars are making a point to act in all south Indian languages whenever the opportunity is coming in their way. Because they are getting popular in other languages, they are insisting in the remakes of popular films that are doing well at box offices in the respective regions. It definitely looks like 2011 will see a record number of remakes from other languages. Finally it doesn't matter whatever may be the motive if these films offer the required entertainment to the audiences as Tamil audience can see the hits of other languages in their mother tongue, performed by their favorite stars.
Just like other trends, this remake trend too will pass after some period of time. Until then let’s enjoy the treat of many blockbusters without any language barriers.
